Authorities Crack Down on Illegal Drone Use Around Coors Field During Games

Press release · Apr 16, 2026

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), FBI, Denver Police Department, and Colorado Rockies are enforcing stricter rules for drone operators near Coors Field during baseball games. Following the first homestand of the 2026 season, authorities identified more than half a dozen operators violating federal regulations. These individuals are being referred to the FAA for investigation under newly strengthened enforcement priorities.

The FAA has clarified that any drone posing a public danger, operating in restricted airspace, or used to commit a crime triggers mandatory enforcement action. Unauthorized operators face significant consequences, including drone confiscation, revocation of pilot certificates, and civil fines up to $75,000 per violation. Law enforcement agencies may also pursue criminal penalties, which can include fines of up to $100,000 and up to one year in federal prison.

Airspace within three miles of Coors Field or Empower Field is restricted one hour before and one hour after Major League Baseball (MLB) or National Football League (NFL) events. Temporary flight restrictions (TFRs) may also apply to other large events at these venues. Flying in violation of a TFR is illegal and dangerous. Operators should check for active restrictions using an FAA-approved B4UFLY service provider.

Most drones operating in U.S. airspace must broadcast Remote ID. Failing to comply with this requirement is a separate federal violation. Authorities use multiple detection methods, including authorized counter-drone tools under the SAFER SKIES Act, to detect unauthorized activity. Personnel and trained partners are stationed at venues to enforce these rules.

If you observe unsafe drone activity, report it immediately to 911, on-site law enforcement, or the FBI at 1-800-225-5324 or tips.fbi.gov.
