Fairchild aircraft in the FAA registry

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) lists aircraft under the manufacturer name "FAIRCHILD" in its national database. As of 2026-10-16, there are 616 registered aircraft under this designation. These registrations cover 64 distinct models, with 602 currently holding valid registrations. Fairchild was an American aircraft and aerospace manufacturing company based at various times in Farmingdale, New York; Hagerstown, Maryland; and San Antonio, Texas.

The fleet is predominantly historic. Most of these aircraft were built between 1928 and 1994, with half of them constructed in 1943 or earlier. The registry is dominated by fixed-wing single-engine aircraft, which account for 504 registrations. Fixed-wing multi-engine aircraft make up the remaining 112. Powerplant distribution shows a heavy reliance on reciprocating engines, found in 519 aircraft, while turboprop engines are present in 93 registrations. In terms of airworthiness, 522 aircraft hold standard class certificates, 19 are experimental, and 10 are restricted.

Geographically, the largest concentration of registered Fairchild aircraft is in Texas, with 71 registrations. California follows with 52, and Florida has 51. The most numerous model in the registry is the M-62A, with 116 aircraft recorded. Built between 1940 and 1949, this two-seat model is followed by the M-62A-3, which has 56 registrations and was built from 1941 to 1965. The SA227-AC, a 12-seat aircraft produced from 1982 to 1991, accounts for 54 registrations. The 24W-46 (53 aircraft, built 1946 to 1947) and the 24R-46 (50 aircraft, built 1939 to 1947) are also heavily represented. The 24W-41A, built between 1940 and 1945, has 18 registered aircraft.

Type Certificate Data Sheets (TCDS) provide the technical specifications for these models. TCDS A-724, held by Fairchild Hiller Corporation, covers the M-62A and M-62A-3. TCDS A8SW, held by Ontic Engineering and Manufacturing Inc., applies to the SA227-AC. The 24W-46 is covered by TCDS A-707, and the 24R-46 by TCDS A-706, both held by the Fairchild Personal Planes Division of Fairchild Engine and Airplane Corp.
