What these numbers can and cannot tell you
Among full years, records peaked at 1,727 in 2008 and were lowest at 1,168 in 2020. The counts cover aircraft with a US N-number, including those abroad, and every kind of flying from airline to balloon.
These are counts, not safety rates. The file has no flight hours, so a make with more aircraft in the air will have more records. Cessna has the most records partly because it has by far the most aircraft in the FAA registry. Do not read the lists below as a ranking of how safe a make, state or type of flying is.
The 2026 row is partial, and the latest years can still change as the NTSB adds records.
By aircraft category
By operating rule
By purpose of flight
By state
By make, as NTSB recorded it
3,409 more records are amateur-built aircraft, which are not listed by make here because NTSB often records the builder's personal name.
From the NTSB aviation accident database: N-registered aircraft, events since 2008, data through Oct 28, 2026. The file is published monthly, so the latest weeks are incomplete and recent records can change. The official source is the NTSB aviation investigation search.
