NTSB analysis

The pilot of the tailwheel equipped airplane reported that he conducted a preflight inspection of the airplane, departed from the airport, and remained in the traffic pattern. While on final approach to land, the airplane landed prior to the runway threshold. The main landing gear contacted the edge of the runway pavement, which protruded out about 12 inches above the surface, resulting in damage to the right landing gear. The airplane pitched nose down, impacted the runway surface, then overturned and came to rest inverted. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing lift strut.

The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical malfunctions or failures with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
