Probable cause
The pilot’s failure to maintain directional control during landing with a right crosswind, which resulted in the airplane’s impact with terrain.
NTSB analysis
The pilot reported that while attempting to land, the airplane touched down, encountered a right crosswind, and began to drift to the left. The pilot attempted to correct the movement by applying opposite rudder and subsequently increased engine power to attempt to go around. However, the left wing contacted the ground, and the airplane then impacted terrain. The airplane sustained substantial damage to the right wing, tail and empennage.
The pilot reported that there were no preaccident mechanical failures or malfunctions with the airplane that would have precluded normal operation.
